| Ice Plants in the Morning Sun in Front of the Lighthouse |
This morning was
gloriously sunny and warm. I put on shorts and a T-shirt for the mild
temperature morning. We had to get up a little bit early since we would have
some school kids come over at 9 am for tours, before the normal opening time of
10 am. The Internet was operating so we were set for the day. Before we started
Dottie gave us a nice big bottle of Moscato wine to thank us for dealing with
the school kids. That was very kind of her, and we will certainly enjoy it
sometime in the future. To start the tour for the kids, Dottie and Leon handled
policing and gift store area, Terrie was on the first floor, me on the second
and Fred in the tower. The boisterous group of kids arrived and we had them in
4 groups and rotated them around the house. It was fun to have them see the
treasure chest and have them pick out goodies. Apparently a few of the kids
freaked at the ladder steps to the hatch to the tower top and forlornly looked
up at the open hatch. One child had screaming meltdown. Glad I didn’t have to
deal with that, but poor Fred did. We finished right at 10 am when the regular
public started showing up for tours. We remained in our positions and Leon took
over the gift shop when Dottie left at 10:30. The rest of the morning and
afternoon went non-stop with tours one after the other till about half an hour
before closing at 2:30 pm due to the tides. Fred saw a grey whale in the
morning and called the Oregon State Parks to let them know what he saw. They
monitor sightings and we are supposed to report sightings.

As the afternoon
progressed the weather got colder, windier and foggy with whitecaps on the
ocean. What a change from the morning when we had the windows open to cool the
house. Fred took down the flag early due to the win and we had tours up to
closing. We were exhausted as usual. I resupplied the gift store a bit as I
have been doing everyday so it’s ready for the next day. Our lunch was finally
at 3:30 pm and we got to relax. Since the weather was blowing hard and nasty I
didn’t plant my flowers but did put them in a less windy place. I put on jeans
and a light cashmere sweater for warmth and a wool/silk scarf. As usual the time just flew by and the sunset
wasn’t much as the fog was thick, though there was some brightness and color in
the sky. Fred took a walk about to see if anything interesting was going on.
Later as we watched the NBA playoff game on TV I did a 1.5-hour workout with my
little 5-pound hand weights and a bunch of PT exercises for my shoulders and
knees, as well as some Pilates and stretching. I hadn’t done any workouts since
arriving on the island and it felt good to finally workout. Fred made a nice little
salad and grilled some salmon for a late dinner. After a full tummy and tiring
day I surfed the web and fell asleep downstairs on the little couch in the old
radio room that has been turned into a cozy nook for our private use. Fred was
upstairs watching TV with the wood burning stove keeping him toasty warm. I
awoke around 1 am with Fred sound asleep and finally crawled to bed about 2 am.
Before bed I always look out the bathroom window and our bedroom windows in the
dark to gaze upon the frothy, churning seas, to see and hear what goes on in
the night and wonder if all the creatures out there are safe and snug in their
mysterious nocturnal world.
