Day 4, 4 June 2015

112 visitors

Here is the Double Barrel 5th Order Fresnel Lens
Today we had a little earlier start due to two sets of school kids that came for tours starting at 9 am. It was another glorious, sunny, breezy morning upon our little rock. One of the best views is from the upstairs bathroom, which was added on in the 1906 time frame. It seems that lighthouse bathrooms always have some of the best views – HA! Actually most of the views are spectacular from this house since it is on such a small space and you seem to look directly down into the ocean and rocks from the windows. Since the tide was low there were a few early visitors but we were not open yet and were getting ready for the kids. Dottie, Leon and Terrie arrived to start our busy morning which started a little late at 9:15 am. We had our positions in the house and maintained those with 4 groups of kids and their chaperons.

The kid groups were rotated around and everything went smoothly. The second group of kids was supposed to show up at 9:45 am but were very late and we started to have other visitors show up for tours at ten. So we started to take them through the house while awaiting the kids. They finally showed up at about 10:30 and we managed to work them through with other groups that trickled in. It was an intense 3 hours with the last groups probably getting their feet a little wet as the tide wormed its way back. Dottie, Leon and Terrie needed to get back also and after quick hugs goodbye they all departed. Whew!  What a great group effort and we all did great – what fun to entertain and educate everyone on this very special magical isle of wonder!  We were starving after our busy morning and had a nice soup, corn bread and fruit lunch. I tried to take a nap but just got 10 minutes in before resuming life on our wondrous site. Again we looked out the big window at our little table in our former radio room and marveled at our spectacular view.

This is a paradise and we feel so fortunate to be here and be a part of history. We waited 2 long years to come here and it is soooo worth the wait! It was nice to relax in the afternoon and do my nails and not have to go anywhere for a change. I went up to the tower and looked through the binoculars for a bit and enjoyed surveying our little kingdom. Fred did have to bring the flag in early since the winds picked up. We watched the spray from the waves fly backwards and swirl around on the rocks as the driving winds hurled the salt spray with such beautiful intensity. One can sit here and just watch the sea and rocks for hours an end like a soothing meditation for the soul. It is also nice to watch the various seabirds from pelicans to seagulls, oyster catchers and sandpipers live their lives amongst the waves and rocks as they have been doing since the dawn of time. It is so soothing to just do that and nothing else.
Iris on the Island

Before dinner I took a walk on the beach at low tide across the isthmus and collected some beach glass and pretty stones. Took a few pictures of the lighthouse from a different angle. I also collected a Spiderman kite that I saw crash land on our side during high tide. No one claimed it so I picked it off the rocky beach and carted it back up here. Perhaps I can give it to a little boy who is in need of a kite. I cooked a delicious mango, orange lime tequila pork dinner with a small salad for dinner. While we were dining we witnessed a raccoon nibbling on the remnants of cat food I had put out earlier. The poor creature seemed to limp on one leg – so we now have two suffering animals to care for. I had a relaxing evening of finishing today’s blog and my reward of knitting on a sleeve of my latest sweater. Sweet dreams of pelican playgrounds just below my window to ease me into dreamland upon a pink laced garden of sweet blossoms.
