| Isthmus Crossing and Very Low Tide |
We awoke to foggy cool weather, and we got
ready to spend the entire day away from our little lighthouse home. It was our
day off – which we didn’t know we would be having till we got to lighthouse
that first day and Dottie explained the schedule. We did meet briefly with
Dottie, Leon and Terrie before we took off and hiked across the isthmus. The
tide was very low with people poking around lots of little tide pools. We saw a
number of people coming across to see the lighthouse. We took off and headed
north to Oregon. We wanted to take a nice drive up the beautiful southern
Oregon coast. It was very foggy as we went through Brookings where we stopped
at a little yarn store and I looked around. I did get a cute little lighthouse
X-stitch and some local made pastel colored yarn with some matching colors in
other yarn. We continued north in the heavy fog and finally got clear of the
fog after 30 miles and could finally enjoy the spectacular scenery with
crashing waves and the many rock formations dotting the coastline.

We stopped 9
miles south of Gold Beach for a walk on the wide blustery beach. After the walk
we had lunch in the small town of Gold Beach. We decided to head to Bandon and
planned to get ice cream there. Just south of Bandon we stopped at another wool
shop that we had been driving by for years. This place was big on spinning as
well as having mostly local made yarn. I did find a set of yarn that that went
from a rich tomato color to a paler pastel version of the same color. This
would be lovely in a shawl with the gradation of color. We finally reached our
destination of Bandon where we enjoyed the scenery and found the local Face
Rock Creamery. We got some yummy cheeses and ice cream there. On the way out of
town we stopped to take a few pictures of the Coquille River Lighthouse that we
had visited previously.

We took a short walk on a very pretty pebbled beach in
the driving cold wind. We continued along the stunning coast and took another
brutal walk high above the beach but with the sand hitting our faces. Off we
went to get back home and get some groceries before it got too dark. The fog
was starting to roll back in for the evening and we stopped to see one more awesome
sight of an arch that was worn away in one of the rock pillars in the ocean. It
was a gorgeous sight with the sun behind it and the rock silhouetted with the
foggy mist starting to envelope it.

It was soothing and relaxing to continue
the drive south with the surreal scenery and I enjoyed watching it as I knitted
which also added to the quiet peace.
We stopped in Brooking for a delicious Thai
dinner and shopping at Fred Meyer. We got back to the lighthouse parking lot at
about 9 pm with just enough light to walk across the isthmus without using
lights. The tide had been out for about an hour. We didn’t take all the
purchases over and will bring the rest over in the morning at low tide. The
lighthouse was lit up in all its glory from the evening floodlights that light
it every night for a few hours. We got across and back up the hill to our
beloved little house and snapped a few night pictures. It was so good to be
home again! We relaxed a bit with some
TV and catching up on our computers. It was so nice to sit in our room with the
wood burning stove making it all nice and cozy. Off to dreamland with visions
of ethereal mists wavering upon great stone monoliths standing guard against
the same pounding seas that want to wear them away to nothing.
